Someone youcan trust.

Kleana is where homes, offices and businesses in Botswana, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Zambia find cleaners, nannies and housekeepers who have been checked - and where cleaners find work that pays properly and treats them as professionals. Both sides sign the same Charter before either can use the platform.

Put Kleana on your phone. It opens like an app and works when the signal is poor.

Kleana never takes a cut of anyone's wages. The client pays for the introduction.

The one difference that matters

Everyone else takes a cut of her wage. Kleana charges the client once, then steps back.

An agency bills a share of her pay every month, for as long as she works. A Facebook group checks nobody at all. Kleana is the third thing: the client pays one introduction fee, both sides sign the Charter, and Kleana takes nothing from anyone's wage - ever.

Four sides, one board

What each side actually gets

Homes, businesses, one-off projects and cleaners meet on the same board - and each is owed a different, plain promise.

The thing that makes it different

The Professional Charter

Most trouble in domestic work starts where nobody wrote anything down. The Charter writes it down, before the first day, for both sides.

A homeowner and a cleaner sitting at a table, both signing the same page
01

This is work, and only work. The engagement is a commercial arrangement between a household and a professional. Nothing about it is personal, romantic or sexual, and neither side may treat it as though it is.

02

The terms are agreed before the first day. Days, hours, duties, pay and time off are settled up front. Work outside what was agreed is agreed again first.

03

Dignity is not negotiable. Clean water, a place to sit and eat, and use of a toilet are the household's side of the bargain. Care of the home and its privacy are the cleaner's.

04

Either side can end it, and either side can report it. Notice is given, not sprung. A breach of the Charter is reported to Kleana and can remove either party from the platform.

Two different jobs, two different deals

Live-out and live-in are not the same arrangement

Treating them as one is where most households and most cleaners come unstuck. Kleana splits them at the door.

Start to finish

How an introduction happens

Two people meeting at a house gate, a phone between them showing the contact details
01Both sides get listed

The cleaner applies and accepts the Charter. The household registers and accepts the same Charter. Nothing is written down anywhere until an emailed code proves the address is real.

02We check the claim

Somebody here reviews the entry before it carries any mark. For a Verified listing that means seeing the Omang or passport and calling a former employer to confirm how long the person actually worked there.

03You browse without names

Listings show skills, areas, rate and verification. No names, no photographs, no phone numbers. Nobody gets pre-judged on anything except what they can do.

04You pay once and we introduce you

Shortlist who fits, pay the once-off introduction fee, and Kleana puts the two of you in touch on WhatsApp. From there you agree your own terms. Kleana takes nothing further, ever.

What a badge actually means

Two levels, and no pretending

A badge that means nothing is worse than no badge at all. Kleana publishes exactly what has and has not been checked.

Not only homes

Offices and businesses, same platform

A clean premises stops being a luxury the moment a customer walks into it. Kleana works the same way for a business as it does for a home - what changes is the hours and the duties, not the deal.

Side by side

Kleana against the way it is usually done

One difference matters more than the rest: an agency keeps taking a share of the wage every month. Kleana charges the client once and then stops.

The questions people actually argue about

Plain answers, straight from the Charter

What a live-in is really owed, what notice is fair, whether she eats with the family - the things that start most of the trouble. The Charter settles them, and so do these.

If you are new here

Three steps, whichever side you are on

A signpost where three yard gates meet, with someone standing at it working out which way to go
  1. Say which side you are onA household or a business looking to hire, or a cleaner looking for work. The two lists are separate pages so nobody has to read their way into the right one.
  2. Shortlist or saveHouseholds shortlist cleaners. Cleaners save the jobs that suit them. What you pick travels with you to the form - nothing is typed out twice.
  3. Accept the Charter and send itBoth sides sign the same code of conduct. A six-digit code to your email proves the address is real, and only then is anything written down.
