This Charter applies to every engagement arranged through Kleana. It binds the client and the cleaner equally. Accepting it is a condition of being on the platform at all, and breaching it is grounds for removal.

What each clause binds each party to
The Charter is not a courtesy note to the cleaner. Every clause carries an obligation in both directions.

1. The nature of the engagement
An engagement arranged through Kleana is a commercial arrangement between a household or business and a working professional. It is not a personal relationship, it is not a favour, and it is not romantic or sexual in any part.
Neither side may propose, imply, invite or expect anything of a romantic or sexual nature. This applies to conduct, to language, and to conditions attached to the work or to pay. There is no version of this clause that is negotiable between consenting parties within an engagement arranged here: if that is what either party wants, the engagement ends first.
2. Terms are agreed before the first day
Before work begins, both sides agree: the days and hours, the duties, the rate or salary, when payment is made, and how much notice either side gives. For live-in arrangements this also covers accommodation, meals, and a full day off each week.
Work beyond what was agreed is renegotiated, not assumed. Additional rooms, additional children, additional hours and a change of duty are all changes to the agreement.
3. What the household undertakes
- To pay the agreed amount, in full, on the agreed day. For live-out work that amount is never below the daily rate published on the cleaner's listing.
- To provide clean drinking water, a place to sit and eat, and use of a toilet.
- For live-in arrangements, to provide private, lockable accommodation and a full day off each week.
- To speak and behave professionally at all times, and to make no remark about the cleaner's body, appearance or private life.
- To keep the cleaner's identity documents in her own possession. Holding a person's Omang or passport is prohibited on this platform without exception.
- To give the agreed notice before ending the engagement.
4. What the cleaner undertakes
- To arrive when agreed, or to send word in good time when she cannot.
- To do the work agreed, to the standard agreed.
- To treat the home, its contents and its privacy with care, and to remove nothing.
- To bring nobody onto the property without the household's agreement.
- To speak and behave professionally at all times.
- To give the agreed notice before ending the engagement.
5. Honesty on the platform
Both sides undertake that what they put on Kleana is true: skills and experience on one side, the household and the work on the other. A Verified listing carries an identity document Kleana has seen and a reference Kleana has called. Misrepresenting either is a breach.
6. Ending an engagement
Either side may end an engagement by giving the agreed notice. Notice is given, not sprung. Wages earned are paid in full regardless of how the engagement ends.
7. Reporting a breach
Either party may report a breach of this Charter to Kleana. Reports are treated confidentially. Kleana may remove either party from the platform, and will do so without hesitation where the breach concerns conduct under clause 1, the withholding of wages, or the holding of a person's identity documents.
Kleana is an introducer and is not a party to the engagement. It cannot enforce an employment agreement or recover unpaid wages, and it does not present itself as able to. What it can do is remove access to the platform, and it does.
8. Where the law sits above this Charter
Nothing in this Charter reduces any right either party has under the Employment Act of Botswana, the Basic Conditions of Employment Act of South Africa, the Labour Act of Zimbabwe, the Employment Code Act of Zambia, or any other law applying where the work is done. Where the law requires more than this Charter does, the law applies.
