Who is behind this

A platform that names itself

A verification mark is only worth as much as the people standing behind it. This page says who runs Kleana, what a mark has actually been checked against, and how to reach a person about it.

Put Kleana on your phone. It opens like an app and works when the signal is poor.

The people

Who stands behind the mark

A platform that checks other people should be willing to be checked itself. These are real names, not an admin account.

Said plainly

What Kleana is, and what it is not

Most confusion about platforms like this comes from a fudge about who is responsible for what. Kleana does not fudge it.

Two neighbourhoods either side of a road, with the same verification shield standing over both

Kleana's role, stated as an obligation and as a limit
QuestionKleana's position
Is Kleana the employer? No. The household or business is. Kleana is not a party to the employment agreement.
Does Kleana pay the wage? No. It runs no payroll and holds no money belonging to a cleaner.
Does Kleana take a cut of the wage? No, at no point and on no tier. The client pays once for the introduction.
What does a Verified mark prove? That an identity document was seen and at least one long-term former employer was called by a person here.
What does it not prove? It is not a criminal record check, not a guarantee of conduct, and not a reference for work not yet done.
Who resolves a dispute about a mark?Kleana, on the evidence it holds. A mark can be removed as easily as it was given.
Where is Kleana based?Gaborone, Botswana. It serves Botswana and is piloting in Gaborone first.

How this was built

Three commitments that shaped the platform

A wall of numbered Charter clauses with someone standing at it, reading
  1. The cleaner never paysListing is free and stays free. A platform funded by taking a slice of a domestic wage has the wrong incentive from the first day, so Kleana is not funded that way.
  2. Both sides sign the same codeThe Charter binds the household exactly as tightly as it binds the cleaner. A code of conduct that only points one way is not a standard, it is a leash.
  3. The site says what was checked, and what was notA Declared listing is labelled Declared. Kleana would rather publish a smaller claim that is true than a bigger one that is not.
