Put Kleana on your phone. It opens like an app and works when the signal is poor.
What it costs
The money, in plain terms
Does Kleana take a cut of the cleaner's wages?
No. Listing on Kleana is free for the cleaner and Kleana takes nothing from her pay, ever. The household pays a once-off fee for the introduction. That is the whole difference between Kleana and an agency.
Does Kleana take money from my pay?
No. Listing is free and Kleana never takes a share of your wages, at any point. The household pays once to be introduced to you. That is the whole of how Kleana earns.
What does an introduction cost on Kleana?
There is a once-off fee for a Declared cleaner and a higher once-off fee for a Kleana Verified cleaner, whose identity document has been seen and whose references have been called. The fee is confirmed with you before anything is unlocked and nothing is charged automatically.
Is there a monthly commission?
No. Kleana charges once, for the introduction. It takes no percentage of the wage and no ongoing fee from either side.
How much does a project cost?
Every project is quoted for the job, not by a fixed fee. You describe the scope, Kleana works out a single price and agrees it with you before anyone starts. There is no monthly retainer and no cut of anyone's wage.
How much should I be paid?
You set your own rate and it is published on your listing, so the conversation starts at a real number. Live-out work is paid at a daily rate. Live-in work is a monthly salary with hours, accommodation and time off agreed in writing before the first day.
Hiring someone
For homeowners
What is the difference between live-out and live-in?
Live-out is set days at a daily rate and the cleaner goes home. Live-in is a full-time arrangement where somebody lives on your property, so what is negotiated is a monthly salary, private accommodation, working hours and a full day off each week. Kleana can draft the written agreement for a live-in arrangement.
What happens if the placement does not work out?
Tell Kleana. Introductions are between people, and people change their minds. The Charter requires notice from both sides rather than a disappearance.
Is Kleana the employer?
No. Kleana introduces and steps back. The household and the cleaner agree their own terms directly. Kleana runs no payroll, holds no wages and is not a party to any employment agreement.
Premises and projects
For offices and businesses
Can an office or business use Kleana?
Yes. Shops, salons, surgeries, guest houses and one-room offices hire through Kleana the same way a home does: browse the listings, shortlist, and pay once to be introduced. Say on the request that it is business premises.
Is there a live-in option for premises?
No. Live-in is a household arrangement only. Everything on the business side is live-out: set days or set hours, at a daily rate.
Do you handle big commercial contracts?
For ongoing premises cleaning Kleana introduces you to an individual cleaner - a shop, a salon, a surgery, a guest house, an office. For a one-off job that needs a whole crew, like a move, a post-build clean or an event, see Projects, where Kleana assembles and manages the team and quotes the job.
Is a project the same as hiring a regular cleaner?
No. A regular cleaner is an ongoing arrangement you agree directly after a one-off introduction. A project is a single job with a start and an end, priced and managed by Kleana. For ongoing premises cleaning, see For offices and businesses instead.
Who manages the crew on the day?
Kleana does. A project has a named lead from the team, and Kleana coordinates the job from the quote to sign-off. You deal with one point of contact, not a room full of strangers.
Are the cleaners on a project checked?
The crew is drawn from Kleana's board, and the people put on a project are checked the same way a listing is - identity seen and a reference called for the Verified ones.
Getting listed
For cleaners
Do I need an Omang to be listed?
Not to be listed. You can be listed as Declared with a working email address and the Charter accepted. An Omang or passport is needed only for the Kleana Verified mark, which also requires a former employer to be called.
Will my name and number be on the internet?
No. Listings show your area, what you do, your arrangement and your rate. No names, no photographs and no phone numbers are published. Your details are given only when an introduction is agreed.
What if I cannot read English well?
Press TN at the top of any page for Setswana, or SN for Shona, and the whole site changes, including this page. Your choice follows you from page to page.
What happens if a household treats me badly?
Report it to Kleana. The Professional Charter binds the household exactly as tightly as it binds you, and a breach can remove them from the platform. That is what signing the same code on both sides is for.
The rules
The Charter and the standards
What is the Professional Charter?
A short code of conduct that both the household and the cleaner accept before either can use the platform. It defines the engagement as strictly professional and commercial, and it binds both sides equally.
Does the Charter replace the labour law?
No. Nothing in the Charter reduces any right either side has under the Employment Act of Botswana, the Basic Conditions of Employment Act of South Africa, the Labour Act of Zimbabwe, the Employment Code Act of Zambia, or any other law applying where the work is done. Where the law requires more than the Charter does, the law applies.
Is a cleaner part of the family, or is it just a job?
It is a job. An engagement arranged through Kleana is a professional, commercial arrangement - never a favour, and never personal, romantic or sexual on either side.
What should be agreed before a cleaner's first day?
The days and hours, the duties, the rate or salary, when payment is made, and how much notice either side gives - all settled before work starts, not after.
What does a household owe a cleaner - water, food, a place to rest?
The agreed pay in full on the agreed day, clean drinking water, a place to sit and eat, and use of a toilet - and for live-in work, private lockable accommodation and a full day off each week.
What is a cleaner responsible for in someone's home?
To arrive when agreed or send word in good time, to do the work to the standard agreed, to care for the home and its privacy and remove nothing, and to bring nobody onto the property without agreement.
What counts as an honest listing on Kleana?
That what you put on Kleana is true - skills and experience on the cleaner's side, the household and the work on the client's. A Verified listing means an identity document seen and a reference called.
What notice is fair when ending a cleaning job?
Whatever notice both sides agreed before the first day. Either side may end the engagement by giving that notice - it is given, not sprung - and wages already earned are paid in full, however it ends.
How do you report a problem with a cleaner or an employer?
Either side can report a breach of the Charter to Kleana, in confidence, by WhatsApp or email. Kleana can remove either party from the platform - and does so without hesitation for the most serious breaches.
